Visitor visas / Subclass 600

What happens if my Visitor visa has a stay limit or departure rule?

Visitor visas Subclass 600
Short answer

You must follow the stay period and any extra stay-limit rules on the visa grant. Going over the allowed period can create cancellation, bond, sponsor and future visa problems.

Visa rule 8531 means you must not stay in Australia after the end of the period of stay allowed by the visa. If a security bond was required, going over the stay period may lead to the bond being forfeited. It may also affect the sponsor's ability to sponsor another Visitor visa applicant for a period.

Visa rule 8558 means you must not stay in Australia for more than 12 months in any 18-month period on that visa. It is not a waiver rule, and it does not automatically stop you from making another visa application before the visa ends.

Visa rule 8573 is a Frequent Traveller stream rule. It means you must not stay in Australia for more than 12 months in any 24-month period. If you go over that cumulative limit, the visa does not automatically end, but Home Affairs may consider cancellation or a warning depending on the circumstances.

Frequent Traveller stream holders may also need to attend a medical assessment if requested, and update personal or contact details within the required time if rule 8609 applies.

Medical emergencies or events beyond your control may be considered, but you should not rely on discretion. Check your grant notice and keep records if something unexpected affects your ability to leave.
