Visitor visas / Subclass 600

Can I work, volunteer or do online work on a subclass 600 Visitor visa?

Visitor visas Subclass 600
Short answer

Usually no, if visa rule 8101 is on your Visitor visa. Some unpaid volunteering, unpaid family support, or limited online work for an overseas business may be allowed, but paid work in Australia can put the visa at risk.

Visa rule 8101 says you must not work in Australia. It is mandatory for the Tourist, Sponsored Family and Approved Destination Status streams of subclass 600.

Unpaid volunteering may be acceptable if it is genuine, short term, usually for less than 3 months, and not a role that would normally be paid work for an Australian worker. Work experience and on-the-job training are generally not treated the same way.

Unpaid family support may also be acceptable when it is temporary and does not take a job opportunity from an Australian worker. Long-term child care or ongoing medical care for a family member may need a different, more suitable arrangement.

Limited online work for an overseas employer or overseas business is generally less likely to be a problem, as long as you are not being paid by an Australian organisation and are not entering the Australian labour market.

If rule 8101 is already on your visa, it cannot simply be removed or waived.
